TOFD uses the diffraction of ultrasonic waves from the tips of discontinuities rather than reflection amplitude. A transmitter-receiver probe pair generates lateral waves and back-wall reflections, capturing diffracted signals from crack tips with exceptional sizing accuracy.

A transmitter probe introduces wide-beam longitudinal sound into the weld, while a receiver probe on the opposite side collects lateral waves, backwall reflections, and diffracted waves from the top and bottom tips of internal flaws. Sizing depends solely on flight arrival time rather than signal amplitude, making it independent of flaw orientation.
