Overview of Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT)
Detailed testing capabilities provided by NP Technical Services Pvt. Ltd. from our West Tambaram, Chennai facility.
Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT/MPI) is an established non-destructive testing method designed to locate surface-breaking and slight sub-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon steel, low-alloy steel, and cast irons. When the component is magnetized, cracks and discontinuities create magnetic flux leakage fields that attract magnetic iron particles, revealing sharp visual flaw indications under visible light or UV illumination.
An electromagnetic yoke, coil, or stationary bench induces a magnetic field into the ferromagnetic test specimen. Finely divided magnetic particles coated with pigments or fluorescent dyes are applied across the test surface. Discontinuities perpendicular to magnetic flux lines disrupt the field, causing leakage that traps particles and forms distinctive defect indications for certified Level II evaluation.

Magnetic Particle Testing FAQs
Common questions regarding magnetic particle testing procedures, technician qualifications, and on-site testing in Chennai.
No. MPT requires ferromagnetic materials such as carbon steel and cast irons. For austenitic stainless steel, aluminum, or brass, Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT) or Eddy Current Testing (ECT) is used instead.
AC magnetization concentrates the magnetic field along the outer skin of the component, providing maximum sensitivity for shallow surface cracks. DC magnetization penetrates deeper into the section, aiding the detection of sub-surface discontinuities.
Yes. NP Tech mobilizes certified Level II inspectors equipped with portable electromagnetic yokes, black/white contrast consumables, and calibrated field indicators for rapid on-site testing across Chennai and Tamil Nadu.
