PAUT uses probe arrays with multiple individual piezoelectric elements that are pulsed with computer-controlled time delays (phasing). This allows sweeping the sound beam through angles from 35° to 75° from a single probe position, providing rich 2D/3D sectorial views (S-scan) and encoded flaw sizing.

A multi-element probe pulsed with computerized time delays steers and focuses the ultrasonic beam at multiple angles without moving the probe mechanically. Acoustic reflections from all angles are synthesized in real-time to generate full-cross-section color image displays (A-scan, B-scan, C-scan, and S-scan) recorded alongside positional encoder data.

Engineering Advantage: PAUT replaces conventional radiography with zero radiation hazard, instantaneous electronic data records, and superior detection of dangerous planar lack-of-fusion flaws.
