Long Range Ultrasonic Testing (LRUT) in Chennai
Screening long pipeline sections from a single test point using low-frequency guided ultrasonic waves to identify corrosion under insulation in Chennai.
Certified Level II inspector performing Long Range Ultrasonic Testing. LEVEL II / III
Overview of Long Range Ultrasonic Testing (LRUT)
Detailed testing capabilities provided by NP Technical Services Pvt. Ltd. from our West Tambaram, Chennai facility.
LRUT employs a ring of transducers clamped around a pipe to send low-frequency torsional guided waves traveling dozens of meters in both directions, screening for internal and external metal loss under insulation without stripping cladding.
A collar containing piezoelectric or magnetostrictive transducer rings is clamped around the outer pipe circumference. Low-frequency guided waves (torsional or longitudinal modes) propagate along the entire pipe wall. When the wave encounters metal loss, corrosion under insulation (CUI), or welds, reflections return to the collar, providing distance and cross-sectional metal loss percentage.
Certified Technical Execution Across Tamil Nadu
Every Long Range Ultrasonic Testing assignment is executed adhering to approved written procedures, client inspection test plans (ITP), and certified Level II & Level III oversight.
Long Range Ultrasonic Testing Techniques Deployed
Calibrated inspection procedures tailored for specific geometries, welded joint configurations, and material alloys.
Torsional Wave Pipeline Screening
Pure torsional wave propagation unaffected by internal liquids, traveling dozens of meters in both directions.
Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) Assessment
Rapid screening of insulated pipelines with only 1 meter of insulation removal at the test collar location.
Road & River Crossing Cased Piping Screening
Volumetric inspection of buried cased pipes and road crossings from accessible above-ground test locations.
Offshore Jetty & Pipe Rack Screening
Inspecting inaccessible overhead pipe racks and jetty lines without erecting full-length scaffolding.
Primary Inspection Applications
Long Range Ultrasonic Testing is deployed across raw stock, fabricated structures, and operational plant equipment.
- Insulated steam and hydrocarbon process lines prone to CUI
- Underground road, railway, and river crossing pipe sections
- Offshore marine platform risers & jetty piping networks
- Soil-to-air transition interfaces & pipe support touch points
Equipment & Standards Used
All instruments and consumables are verified and calibrated prior to each inspection shift.
- Multi-Channel Guided Wave LRUT Data Acquisition Systems
- Pneumatic and Solid Clamping Rings (2-inch to 48-inch pipe diameters)
- Calibrated Piezoelectric Torsional Module Transducers
- Analysis Software with A-Scan, Dispersion Curves, and DAC Curves
Long Range Ultrasonic Testing FAQs
Common questions regarding long range ultrasonic testing procedures, technician qualifications, and on-site testing in Chennai.
Under typical conditions, guided waves can travel 30 to 100 meters in both directions from a single collar location, depending on pipe condition, coating, and viscous dampening.
