A radioactive isotope source (such as Iridium-192 or Selenium-75) or X-ray generator emits penetrating radiation through the weld specimen onto industrial radiographic film. Thinner or less dense flaw areas absorb less radiation, exposing the film more and producing dark shadow images that certified Level II interpreters evaluate under calibrated densitometers.
